Investigating the mental health of urban transport drivers

Abstract

Introduction: The role of drivers in road accidents is very important and in other words they deal with public safety and health, the present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the mental health of urban transport drivers in Gorgan city

Methods: This descriptive-analytical study was conducted on 70 urban transport driversin Gorgan in 2016. After coordinating with the Shahrgorgan bus company, the drivers were randomly selected using the driver's identification code. Then they went to the gathering places of the drivers at the bus terminals. After obtaining informed consent, they first completed the demographic information and then the general health questionnaire (GHQ-28). The data were analyzed using SPSS 23 to describe the variables and descriptive statistics indicators such as mean, standard deviation, frequency and percentage, and statistical charts.

Results: 69 people (98.6%) were married drivers and their average age was 39.05 ± 5.82 years. The ethnicity of the majority (81.4%) of the drivers was Fars. The average years of driving was 10.15 ± 4.45 years. The highest general health score related to anxiety and insomnia subscale was 15.17 ± 3.98 (p = 0.813), and the lowest score related to depression was 10.55 ± 4.05 (p = 0.229). scores were higher in Persian ethnic drivers than non-Persian drivers (p = 0.008).

Conclusion: urban transport drivers have mental health problems, which mostly include anxiety and insomnia. Considering the role of drivers in society, it is recommended that municipal officials pay more attention to their mental health.
