Abstract

Introduction: According to the 5th edition of psychological disorders diagnostic and statistical guidelines, obsessive-compulsive disorder is considered as a separate class that is characterized by frequent and severe obsessive behavior and affects 2 to 3% of the population. This research aimed to comparison the effectiveness of online acceptance & commitment treatment and behavioral activation therapy on repetitive negative thinking in obsessive patients.

Methods: in this quasi-experimental study, 45 obsessive-compulsive patients who referred to psychotherapy clinics in Mashhad in 2020 were selected and randomly divided into 3 groups of 15 people (2 experimental groups and one control group). Subjects then responded to McVee et al. and the obsessive-compulsive disorder questionnaire of Madsley. The first experimental group underwent 8 sessions of an online acceptance and commitment treatment and the second experimental group underwent 8 sessions of 90-minute group behavioral activation therapy. Control group did not receive any intervention. Then the subjects answered the questionnaires.

Results; The results showed that the mean of negative thinking in the act group and behavioral activation in the post-test was significantly lower than the pre-test (p <0.05). In Act intervention, there was no difference between the mean of negative thinking in the post-test and follow-up, but in the behavioral activation intervention, the mean of negative thinking in the follow-up phase was significantly increased compared to the post-test (P <5%

Conclusion: The results showed that both therapies were effective on repetitive negative thinking in obsessive-compulsive individuals, but online act intervention was significantly more effective than behavioral activation therapy
