<![CDATA[Introduction: Difficulties in emotional processing are common in Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and are associated with the symptoms of this syndrome. This research aimed to examine the psychometric properties of a researcher-developed instrument to better identify impairments in emotion processing in these patients.

Materials and Methods: This descriptive-correlational study was conducted in two phases among healthy individuals and IBS patients in Iran (2024). First, a Persian translation of the Emotional Processing Questionnaire was performed on a non-clinical population (n= 278). Subsequently, this questionnaire, along with the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI-18), was administered to IBS patients (n= 305). Confirmatory factor analysis, construct reliability, criterion validity, and assessment of reliability were analyzed.

Results: Findings indicated strong content validity (CVR= 78-92% and CVI= 82-94%). Exploratory factor analysis revealed four factors: emotional experience and expression, emotional awareness and differentiation, emotional tolerance, and emotional communication and regulation. These factors were confirmed by confirmatory factor analysis in the patient sample (GFI= 0.9). Criterion validity showed that disrupted emotional processing was a significant positive predictor of somatization (P< 0.001), depression (P< 0.001), and anxiety (P< 0.001). Among the subscales, emotional tolerance was a significant predictor of somatization, depression and anxiety, while emotional experience and expression was only a significant predictor of depression. The overall scale demonstrated high reliability (α= 0.921, CR= 0.943, Guttman split-half coefficient= 0.871).

Conclusion: With its satisfactory psychometric properties, the Emotional Processing Questionnaire can be used as a reliable and valid tool for measuring emotional processing in Irritable Bowel Syndrome patients.]]>

<![CDATA[Introduction: Approximately half of the nation's population included women who hold integral positions in the economically active community. This present study aimed to compare the levels of obsessions, depressed mood, and alexithymia between housewives and employed women. Materials and Methods: The target population consisted of all female schoolteachers and housewives residing in the 7th district of Tehran from July to September 2023. The research employed a targeted sampling method for female heads of households and a convenient sampling method for housewives. The statistical sample comprised 60 individuals. The instruments included the Maudsley Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (MOCI), the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20, and Goldberg's Depression Scale (GDS). We analyzed the data using independent t-test and SPSS-27 software. Results: The findings indicated a significant difference in the mean scores for washing and cleaning and slow-repetition components (P< 0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the scores for verification or checking and doubts (P> 0.05). Additionally, there was a significant difference between the groups in the depressed mood variable (P< 0.001). Conclusion: Our findings indicated that there exists a distinction between housewives and employed women in terms of their obsessiveness and depressed mood; however, the variable of alexithymia does not vary significantly between employed women and housewives. ]]>

<![CDATA[Introduction: Periodontal disease is a widespread, multifactorial inflammatory condition affecting the supporting structures of teeth. Chronic periodontitis, its most common form, progresses gradually and is influenced by both biological and psychosocial factors. Depression, a prevalent mental disorder, has been linked to periodontitis in several studies, though findings are inconsistent. This study aims to explore the potential association between the two conditions.

Materials and Methods: This study included 70 participants—35 with severe chronic periodontitis and 35 healthy controls—matched by age, sex, and education in Yazd-Iran. Depression levels were measured using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Data were analyzed using SPSS-26 with Chi-square and independent t-tests to compare group differences.

Results: Demographic data showed no significant differences between the periodontitis and control groups, confirming successful matching. There was no significant difference in depression levels between the two groups (P= 0.11). These findings suggest that the prevalence of depression in individuals with chronic periodontitis is comparable to that of periodontally healthy individuals.

Conclusion: This study found no significant difference in depression levels between individuals with severe chronic periodontitis and healthy controls. Possible reasons include a limited age range, strict inclusion criteria, and a relatively small sample size. Future research should explore biological markers and lifestyle factors to better understand the complex link between depression and periodontal disease.]]>

<![CDATA[Introduction: During the COVID-19 pandemic, parents faced various challenges that affected family well-being, especially motherhood. We evaluated the relationships between maternal depression, anxiety, and stress with child anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic and then investigated the effectiveness of virtual training in parenting and play therapy skills on maternal anxiety, depression, and stress, as well as child anxiety.

Materials and Methods: In the present study, mothers of children aged between four and six years (N= 315) were recruited in Iran in February 2021. After the initial screening was based on the level of child anxiety and the total number of dropouts, the participants were randomly assigned to the intervention (N= 26) or the control (N= 31) group. The intervention included eight virtual 90-minute online training sessions along with follow-up acclivities using a virtual offline group. To assess the variables, the DASS-21, the SCAS-Parent and the covariance analysis methods were used.

Results:The results showed that virtual training led to a significant reduction in maternal anxiety, depression, and anxiety. Overall, this program has been effective in improving the mental health of both mothers and children.

Conclusion: Given the findings, virtual training for parenting and play therapy skills can be considered an effective therapeutic method for reducing anxiety and depression in both mothers and children during quarantine situations, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.]]>

<![CDATA[Introduction: Depression and rumination are prevalent among infertile women, requiring effective interventions. This study compared the effectiveness of Intensive Psychodynamic Therapy (IPT) and SPARS-based Emotion-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (EF-CBT) on rumination and depression. Materials and Methods: In this study, 60 infertile women in Tehran-Iran in 2024, were purposively sampled and randomly assigned to two intervention groups and a control group (20 each). The Nolen-Hoeksema Rumination Questionnaire and Beck Depression Inventory were used. IPT consisted of 8 group sessions (2/week, 60 min each), while EF-CBT based on the SPARS model consisted of 12 sessions (2/week, 60 min each). The control group was placed on a waiting list. Data were analyzed using ANCOVA, ANOVA, and t-tests. Results: Significant differences were observed between the intervention groups and control in post-test scores of rumination (P= 0.000, F= 175.118) and depression (P= 0.000, F= 61.57). EF-CBT had a greater effect on rumination and depression than IPT. Conclusion: Both SPARS-based EF-CBT and IPT effectively reduce rumination and depression in infertile women. Awareness and acceptance of basic emotions, cognitive restructuring, and emotional expression are key mechanisms. These interventions can be applied in infertility clinics and counseling centers.]]>

<![CDATA[Introduction: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disorder that compromises patients’ physical and psychological health. Sustained treatment adherence is essential for effective management, yet often difficult to maintain. This study examines the influence of attachment style, Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) and perceived social support on adherence among individuals with MS.

Materials and Methods: This descriptive-correlational study included 239 MS patients from the Comprehensive MS Center in Mashhad-Iran, in 2022. Participants completed validated questionnaires on attachment styles, perceived social support, HRQoL, and treatment adherence. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to analyze relationships between variables.

Results: Bivariate correlations showed avoidant and anxious attachment negatively associated with treatment adherence, while secure attachment was positively associated. However, SEM revealed no significant direct effects of attachment styles on adherence. Perceived social support (β= 0.353, P= 0.001) and HRQoL (β= 0.277, P= 0.003) demonstrated significant positive direct effects on adherence. Indirect effects of attachment styles on adherence via perceived social support and HRQoL were non-significant.

Conclusion: Findings emphasize the role of HRQoL and perceived social support in promoting treatment adherence in MS patients. Although attachment styles correlate with adherence, they lack direct predictive power. Interventions targeting HRQoL improvement and social support enhancement could effectively boost adherence in this population.]]>

<![CDATA[Introduction: Separation Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is the most common anxiety disorder in children, in which parental factors play a significant role. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of reflective parenting on children’s separation anxiety symptoms, parent-child relationship, and emotional style in mothers of children with separation anxiety disorder.

Materials and Methods: The statistical population included all mothers of children aged 4 to 6 years with separation anxiety disorder residing in Isfahan-Iran, in 2023. From this population, 30 mothers were selected through purposive sampling from kindergartens in Isfahan and were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. Pre-test measures included the Separation Anxiety Assessment Scale (SAAS), the Child-Parent Relationship Scale (CPRS), and the Maternal Emotional Style Questionnaire (MESQ), which were administered to both groups. The reflective parenting intervention was presented to the experimental group in ten sessions, and then post-test and follow-up test were administered to both groups. Data were analyzed using mixed multivariate analysis of variance.

Results: Compared to the control group, the experimental group showed significant changes that were maintained at follow-up (P< 0.001), including reductions in children’s separation anxiety symptoms and mothers’ emotion-dismissing style, as well as improvements in parent-child relationship quality and mothers’ emotion-coaching style.

Conclusion: Reflective parenting can enhance the parent-child relationship, promote emotion-coaching style in mothers, and reduce both separation anxiety symptoms in children and emotion-dismissing style in mothers.

<![CDATA[Introduction: Positive mental health is a vital component of overall well-being. The primary objective of this study was to validate three measures of positive mental health among Iranian migrant and non-migrant students.

Materials and Methods: In this study conducted in Iran and Germany, the convenience sampling method was used to select Iranian migrant and non-migrant students. Participants completed an online survey that included three measures of positive mental health—Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), Social Support Questionnaire (F-SozU K-14), Resilience Scale (RS-11), and Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21). Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and reliability analysis were conducted to assess the validity and reliability of the measures within this population.

Results: In this study, 584 Iranian non-migrant students and 186 Iranian migrant students participated. The findings showed that the positive mental health constructs were negatively correlated with the DASS-21 and positively correlated with one another. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the adequacy of the model, fulfilling all necessary assumptions. Measurement invariance analyses for the SWLS, F-SozU K-14, and RS-11 indicated good model fit and consistency across both migrant and non-migrant student groups.

Conclusion: The findings of this study support the validity of these three measures. The researchers, educators, and policymakers assess key aspects of positive mental health among Iranian migrant and non-migrant students using these valid tools.]]>
